Chapter 10

Methos led Carter out by steering him by the back of the elbow, awkwardly pushing him along. As Carter’s eyes re-adjusted to the dullness of mere daylight, he noticed a tingling sensation in his hands where Theophilus had touched him. He thought, for one brief moment, they glowed.

Methos led him through the center of town. Carter could see people preparing meals through the windows of their cottages. Each would have a perfect little dinner for their perfect little family in their perfect little town in the perfect world. Regret pierced his core. The darkness of his life stood in harsh contrast to this watercolor painting of life at its best.

Methos led Carter to a garden at the edge of town. This garden was meticulously manicured as were all of the others Carter had seen in this world. In the center of the garden were two trees, both filled with juicy, red fruit. Carter looked from one to the other.

“Which is the forbidden one?”

“What? You really don’t know, do you?” Methos started laughing. It was an eerie, cackling laugh. Carter was struck by the oddness of his attendant.

“What’s so funny?” Carter stood midway between the ancient trees. He stepped toward the one to his right. Nothing happened. He stepped closer. Nothing. He reached toward a low-hanging limb.

Zzzzhip. The beam of a laser shot out from his right to just in front of Carter’s hand. He froze. Zzzhip. A second beam shot from the opposite side. The two alternated, blasting beams, creating an intermittent barrier. Carter took a slow, deliberate step backwards.

Methos cackled wildly, then, with effort, caught his breath. He took a stick from the ground and threw it into the beam. It sizzled slightly before disintegrating.

“I guess that’s the Tree of Life,” said Carter, wiping his brow.

“How odd, how odd,” Methos muttered. “You are forbidden from the Tree of Life, not the Kogae! But, I don’t recommend you eat from the Kogae either!”

“Why did you bring me here then?”

Methos shrugged and flippantly added, “Where else would anyone go to die?”

Carter looked around.

“Is this it?”

Like many believers, he was less afraid of death than the pain he might experience in the process. But he felt good. He felt healthy; so alive. But the sun was low in the sky and the elder said he was going to die today. The hairs on the back of his neck rose up. He knew it was wrong to want Euphonie or Andy to be here with him—why should they be exposed to sin and death. Yet, he hated the thought of being alone. Even his quirky companion brought some comfort.

“Methos—have you ever seen anyone—or anything, die?”

Methos startled, “Why are you speaking to me? No. I haven’t. Nothing dies here. Except you, I guess,” he snorted a queer laugh.

“Are you fallen?”

“What did you say? I’m not here to die! You are!”

“Yes, but,” Carter had already reconciled himself to physical death... what else could happen to him? He might as well satisfy his curiosity.

“What’s up with you?” You’re different than the others.
